Why it matters: the fire data
home structure fires a year involved clothes dryers in 2014-2018, with an average of 7 deaths, 344 injuries and $233 million in direct property damage each year.
NFPA Researchof those home dryer fires were caused by a failure to clean, the leading cause. 27% started when dust, fiber or lint ignited.
NFPA ResearchFailure to clean was still the leading factor in residential clothes dryer fires in US Fire Administration data for 2018-2020.
US Fire Administrationis the peak month for residential clothes dryer fires (11%), and they are more common in fall and winter, per the USFA's 2008-2010 study.
US Fire AdministrationThe NFPA figure counts every home structure fire in which a dryer was involved; the older USFA study counted a narrower set (about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires a year in 2008-2010). Both rank failure to clean first.
Between cleanings
The NFPA advises cleaning the lint filter before or after every load, never running a dryer without a lint filter, using rigid or flexible metal venting to keep air flowing, keeping the area around the dryer clear of things that can burn, and turning the dryer off when you leave home or go to bed. Gas dryers should also be inspected by a qualified professional so the gas line and connection stay intact and leak-free.
